About Us
Haven Elementary, named after abolitionist Bishop Gilbert Haven, was originally the Haven Home School for Girls in Savannah, established to advance education in the South. The school, first located on Anderson Street, was moved in 1890 to a brick building on Montgomery Crossroads, built by the Northern Methodist Church and later acquired by the Chatham County Board of Education. Involved in desegregation efforts in the 1970s, Haven initially served only kindergarten, fifth, and sixth grades, but a new program in the 1980s expanded it to include all grades from kindergarten through fifth.
In 1988, Haven launched a Science and Math Magnet Program, followed by minor renovations, and in 1993, a complete renovation introduced new facilities such as a science lab, music and art rooms, and an indoor physical education space. An engineering component was added to the magnet program in 1994.
In 2014, the staff and students spent their last year in the former Haven Elementary building that had been in existence for 54 years. From 2015 to 2017, staff and students were relocated to the old Pulaski Elementary Building on Montgomery Street. During this time, the former Haven Elementary was demolished and the building of the new Haven Elementary began. Staff, students, district personnel and community stakeholders are gathered on July 27, 2017, for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Haven Elementary.
Haven Hornets have been proud occupants in our new building since the 2017/2018 school year.
